"God picked up the mountains and said 'you will be this high' and they obeyed. He said to the oceans 'you will be this deep and no deeper and go this far and no farther' and they obeyed. He said to the stars 'you will go here and no where else' and they obeyed. And yet, He looks at us and says 'please, come to me.' And we say 'no.' This is how wicket and deceitful the human heart is."
Since the very beginning, we have turned away from God and all that He is. We've heard of His beauty, His power, His splendor, His holiness and yet continually we choose things over Him.
A long time ago there was an old man named Moses. He was a shepherd. He had a stutter and speech problems and he was, without a doubt, nothing special. During Moses's lifetime, the Isrealites (God's people) were under control of the Pharaoh. Pharaoh made them slaves who worked hours upon hours each and every day. Pharaoh was also relentless, powerful and mean. So the Isrealites in their pain called to God. And God, who never leaves, heard them. One day God appeared to Moses and told him that He had heard the groaning of the Isrealites, He had seen their pain, and He was going to rescue them. How was He going to do it? Through Moses. "Now go, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Isrealites, out of Egypt." (Exodus 3:10)
And that's exactly what God did. He rescued them. God spoke through Moses to Pharaoh and after plague upon plague, Pharaoh let them go. Moses and all the Isrealites fled from Egypt being chased by the Egyptian army. During the day God led them with a pillar of cloud and at night with a pillar of light. He parted the seas and crushed their enemies. He gave them water from a rock when they were thirsty. After all that, after all that God did, they turned their backs on Him. On the God who had rescued them and loved them.
We shake our heads and think "how could they do such a thing?" But... are we really any different? God may not have rescued you from the Egyptian army, but did He not rescue you from death? From your burden of sin? Did God not love you with an all consuming love? Did He not chase you and pursue you every day of your life? Did He not go to every length possible to save you? Did He not give His only Son for you? This is the exact same God who rescued the Isrealites. The God of the universe. And who are we to turn our backs on Him?
