"Well, you need to get some sort of degree as a back up plan."
Ahhh, the classic "back-up plan". In the western world, a back-up plan is common for every area of someone's life. First of all, this says something about our world- nothing lasts forever and most things fail. For Christians, however, I think having a "back-up plan" for our lives is one of our down falls. I mean, as Christians, our call is to follow Jesus... and if we are following Jesus, isn't having a back up plan kind of an insult to Him? It's saying "Jesus, I'm going to follow You, but just in case things don't work out, I have a back-up."
Seriously?! This is Jesus. J-E-S-U-S. This is the Jesus who told his disciples to cast their net over the side of their boat and when they did, it was too heavy to even haul up. The Jesus who, when Peter asked Him about tax money, He told him to go fishing.. and Peter found the money in the fish's mouth. This is the Jesus who walked to Calvary. The disciples had given up their life to follow Him... and He was murdered. They had no plan B. They had walked with Him for years and now He was hanging from a cross. A back-up plan never crossed their minds. They had left their jobs and their families for Him. But praise God that their story didn't end there. No... because this? This is Jesus. This is the Jesus that rose from the grave. The Jesus that conquered death.
See... we don't need a back-up plan. We just need Him. He will always provide. He will always come through. He will always be enough. When I follow Jesus, I want to follow Him with a full out, burning passion. I don't need a back-up plan. Why would I? After all, this is Jesus.
